Do you know what ADHD is?

October is ADHD awareness month.
This is the first of a series of articles discussing ADHD.

Let me ask you a  question.
Did you know that behaviour is brain based?
Did you know that current research has shown that certain areas of the ADHD brain are structured differently?

The main differences lie in the right prefrontal region which is associated with attention and inhibition, the striatal region, associated with pursuing pleasurable or rewarding behaviour, the anterio cingulate cortex, which help you self-regulate your emotional reactions, and the cerebellum, associated with timing amongst other executive functions.

Did you know that brains of those with ADHD are deficient in noreprinephrine and dopamine.  The structural abnormalities in the ADHD brain are the basis for the development of the disorder.  This structural abnormality is genetic, meaning it goes down from parent to child.  The structural differences in the brain account for the behaviour challenges in those with ADHD.

If you have ADHD, it is very likely that one or both of your parents had it, either ADHD or ADD, and it will be very likely that one or more of your children will have the condition. Please remember that having ADHD is not your fault.
Please understand that you have many strengths related to your ADHD.  many famous inventors and talented people throughout the ages had ADHD. They used their ADHD to help them reach their life goals.
